Storytell Mailing List

This email list is an excellent resource for any storytelling question that you may have. I have found it particularly useful on many occasions.  There are at least 500 storytellers on the list.  This community includes professional tellers, children's librarians,  people who use storytelling in their profession (teachers, preachers, etc.), as well as amateur storytellers who are just starting out.  Topics of discussion include storytelling techniques, story requests and suggestions for specific venues or occasions,  storytelling business topics and conference, convention and seminar announcements.  Weather you are just starting out, or your an old pro, everyone is welcome and most questions get  very quick, thoughtful responses.

To subscribe (free) to STORYTELL send an email

To: storytell-request@twu.edu
Subject: [none needed]
In the message body put only (substituting your own name):

SUBSCRIBE STORYTELL your first name your last name
END

If you have trouble subscribing, unsubscribing, or with setting subscription options, check out the new official homepage for the Storytell list at http://www.libraryschool.net/storytell.htm but it isn't always working.  The old page is still at http://www.twu.edu/cope/slis/storytell.htm, but the detailed instructions aren't all up to date. Once on the list, you will receive instructions on how to send messages, set nomail while away, quit the list, etc .If these can't answer your questions, in the last resort try Ellen Perlow: eperlow@twu.edu. She is the TWU Coordinator, in the Technology Assistance Group

You can also access the archives.  The messages have been automatically archived for several years. These archives should be accessible via the web at www.twu.edu/lists/ , searchable by keyword, or via www2.twu.edu/archives/storytell.html , arranged by date-month/year. However, like the other home page, it is sometimes unavailable.  The archives available via the web lag behind the current date by at least a month, if not more.
You can also retrieve the archives by email, and these are right up to date.

To get a list of the available archive files send a message to:    LISTSERV@VENUS.TWU.EDU
No subject header is needed
Put these words in the body:                                      INDEX STORYTELL

Then you can then order these files by email with a GET STORYTELL LOGxxxx message.

Other Storytelling Mailing Lists

Folklore

Not about storytelling directly, but useful for tracking down academic information about tales, subjects, and origins. To subscribe to Folklore send a message to listserv@listserv.tamu.edu with the word SUBSCRIBE in the body.

NerdNosh

Not a discussion list, but a virtual story session, it is exclusively for people to tell personal stories. There are over a thousand subscribers. Many stories are presented in more of a literary style rather than an oral storytelling style. To get more info go to www.nerdnosh.org .

Storytelling Newsgroups

alt.arts.storytelling

This group is intended for the discussion of storytelling, in other words the oral art of performing stories. It is not intended as a place for posting creative writing. However, the newsgroup is sometimes inundated with people who don't understand the difference between oral storytelling and writing who  post creative writing; as well as the usual spam. Because of this, most professional and amateur storytellers have moved over to the storytell mailing list instead. However, if you are willing to wade through the irrelevant, it can still be occasionally useful. There are a few storytellers who still watch for questions and respond.

uk.culture.arts.storytelling

This is a new group for discussing the art of storytelling in the UK.
