The Story Teller’s Tale

Classic Children’s Stories,     Fairytales and Folktales

storybook lady logoOnce upon a time, there was a storyteller who told stories all over the land: to little children, old people, and to everyone in between.   She told folktales and myths handed down from ages past, and adaptations of literature from favorite classics.

When this lady told stories, it was as if she, herself, was a book; the storyteller's  spoken words were the text, and her gestures and pantomime drew the illustrations. She used facial expressions and her voice to make the different characters come alive.   She even wore  a "Book Jacket" costume!  Pretty soon people started calling her…

Storytelling Programs

CLASSICS FOR YOUNG CHILDREN

These stories are adapted from folktales and classic literature that children have grown to love. Young children love to participate, and with this program they get the opportunity to join in on the storytelling.

LITERARY CLASSICS

Older children and adults will be entertained by a selection of timeless masterpieces.

FOLKTALES FROM AROUND THE WORLD

Folktales are ideal for audiences of any age. Young children love the predictability of the familiar. Older children and adults prefer to hear stories that they do not recognize. The storyteller will help her audience tour the world with folklore from many countries or prepare a selection of stories about a requested area or culture.

HOLIDAYS

the Storybook Lady has a variety of seasonal programs including holiday shows. Autumn programs include Harvest Happenings as well as Halloween Stories and Thanksgiving Tales. December brings The Gifts Of Giving, Christmas Classics, Hanukkah Stories and Winter Holidays , a program of celebration from many cultures. In February, you can hear Valentine Stories, celebrate President’s Day with Abe’s Anecdotes or honor Black History Month using African American Tales. The springtime brings Irish Leprechaun Yarns for St. Patrick’s Day and Bunny Tales at the Easter season.

CUSTOM TAILORED PROGRAMS

Julie can develop a special program for her visit to your school. You may wish to have a program for a special occasion or perhaps to illustrate specific educational goals. Upon request, she can develop a teaching guide for follow-up to any presentation.

Workshops, Residencies
& Lessons

Julie Silverman-Ditton, the Storybook Lady, has a degree in education and experience teaching children at all grade levels, but her first love has always been theatre. She combined her talents and became a storyteller - performing and teaching literature at the same time. Her programs make the stories come alive, both entertaining and educating the listener.  She has told tales and taught storytelling at schools, daycare centers, scout meetings and a variety of other settings.

Since the days of yore, storytelling has been used as a form of instruction as well as a form of entertainment. History was taught in the form of poems and legends; life lessons were taught by folktale. Today, storytelling is still a vital tool.  School children taking part in workshops or ongoing residencies can learn other content area while studying the art of storytelling.   Teachers can attend staff workshops to learn how to use storytelling in the classroom.

Workshops for businesses and organizations as well as private storytelling lessons are also available.  Storytelling is one of the most natural forms of public speaking. Lessons in storytelling can bring effective communication skills, poise and self-confidence to the speaker.   Clergy and businessmen can use stories to enhance their message.  Parents and youth leaders use stories to entertain the children
